Why do wisdom teeth exist and why are they a problem?
Most problems are related to little or no space available for wisdom tooth to erupt.

There are 2 reasons for this
1..For millions of years our diet was mostly RAW food. Our JAW muscles had to work HARD to chew this raw and uncooked food....this powerful pull of muscles meant our jaws grew more broad U shaped.
Jump to modern day, with all the easily available processed / cooked food, our teeth and muscles don't work very hard hence narrow jaws & lack of space.
2. Raw & hard food can wear down the front teeth, making enough space for wisdom teeth to erupt in place.

Common Problems associated with wisdom teeth
Due to lack of space they might erupt partially or in undesirable positions, leading to open gums and pockets for food lodgement, irritation and infection.
Food lodgement will not only decay the wisdom tooth but also the adjacent healthy tooth needing additional treatment.
Other common complication may be cyst around wisdom tooth which may hallow out the jaw bone or eat up the adjacent teeth.
Chronic irritation of gums, cheeks and tongue might lead to ulcers or even malignant lesions.
Changes the way your jaws occlude while biting making muscles tender and painful.

Treatment
At times gums around partially erupted wisdom teeth are swollen and painful. In that case the gums are simply excised (removed) and observed until they are healthy.
Partially , un-erupted or malpositioned wisdom teeth are advised extractio. the wisdom tooth extraction are done mostly in clinical setup under Local anesthesia taking 45-60 mins. Medicines might be needed for 3-5 days to control pain n swelling.

Things to remember
Its in favor of the patient to to do extraction at early age because the bone is more yielding, softer and post extraction healing and pain control is much better
Very often both upper and lower wisdom teeth are advised to be removed simultaneously because any single tooth left without opposing tooth tend to over erupt and impinge on gums in biting or traumatic bite.
If your wisdom teeth are still present and healthy within your mouth, be sure that you are still brushing and flossing them, as these teeth can still develop tooth decay.
35% of people will have 1 or more wisdom teeth missing!
